The championship is open!

On March 21st, 2018 the Opening ceremony of the IV World University Speed Skating Championship took place at Minsk – Arena complex.

One of the main purpose of the Opening ceremony was to mark the identity of Belarusian people and to show their unique culture. The performance of the well-known and honored collective of the Republic of Belarus Kharoshki and the orchestra of wind instruments of the Belarusian State Academy of Music was truly appreciated by the audience and created a true holiday atmosphere.

Tribunes welcomed participating countries of the IV World University Speed Skating Championship solemnly presented at the Opening ceremony. Athletes from 14 countries located on different continents have arrived to Belarus. They are all united by the belief in victory, true love to speed skating and great desire to set new records.

The Opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Education of the Republic of Belarus Igor Karpenko, Vice-Minister of Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Baraulya, President of the European University Sports Association Adam Roczek, Chairman of the Belarusian Association of Student Sports Alexander Bogdanovich, Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee, rector of the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture Sergei Repkin.

Igor Karpenko said: ”I hope that holding of the IV World University Speed Skating Championship will raise the prestige of the Republic of Belarus as the sports country. I am sure that each team includes best athletes of their country who are ready to demonstrate honest and uncompromising struggle. Wish you successful start and bright victories! Welcome to Minsk!».

Adam Roczek, the President of the European University Sports Association, also greeted participants and guests of the championship. Emphasizing that speed skating plays an important role in the student sports movement, Adam Roczek noted that a new page of University sports will be created today.”I’m very glad to share this amazing moment with you and hope that you will sincerely enjoy the hospitality of the Republic of Belarus, which allow you to fully enjoy this holiday”.

After raising the FISU (International University Spoorts Federation) flag on behalf of all participants of the championship, the solemn oath was made by Ignat Golovatsiuk the leader of the Belarusian team who represented our country at the Winter Olympic Games-2018 in Pyeongchang.

A loaf-the symbol of prosperity was presented to the representatives of the European University Sports Association as a sign of Belarusian cordiality and hospitality.

The organizers of the championship hope that the joy of sports victories, kind support of fans will forever remain in the hearts of all those who took part in the event. And guests of our country will be able to take with them  the most pleasant memories associated with the Republic of Belarus.
